General Statement of Job Seasonal Production/Position The Vienna Youth Players (VYP) Sound Engineer will be responsible for utilizing the sound system to ensure that all cast members can be heard clearly and the overall sound of the production is clear and well mixed for VYP's summer musical productions for teens ages 10-18. The sound engineer will install, communicate with the director regarding any additional equipment needed, share expectations for mic use and etiquette for student actors, run the sound board during the shows, strike and store all audio equipment after the show, and teach the student sound crew throughout the process.
The Sound Engineer works under the supervision of the Director of Vienna Youth Players.
Work Hours: The Sound Engineer will work with the Director, Assistant Director, and their student sound crew to schedule enough time to complete the equipment set-up and testing within the desired time frame and within the limitations of space reservation. The sound equipment such as the (sound board), wiring, and microphones must be returned to the standard settings provided by the VCC or put away on the day of strike, which will be on the day of the last show. The sound engineer will be expected to attend the following:
Tech Week: July 14-18 7:00-10:00 pm
Shows: July 19, 20, 25, 26, 27
The hours listed below are for rehearsals. The director may also add additional rehearsal times outside of these hours. Annual work start and end dates will be determined by the director in coordination with the Recreation Program Coordinator II, Events.
7:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, June and July
2025 Production Dates : July 19, 20, 25, 26, 27
All new employees must satisfactorily complete a background check. A conditional offer of employment may then be made contingent upon the successful completion of drug and TB tests. Duties and Responsibilities The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Ultimately it is the director's responsibility to complete tasks needed to produce the show so additional tasks may be required. Essential Functions: Schedule - Coordinate with the sound crew, Director, Assistant Director and/or Stage Manager to schedule days to work on lighting.
Design - Choose which sound equipment to use.
- Notify the director if additional sound equipment is necessary as early in the production process as possible.
- Create a sound cue sheet in collaboration with the music director and stage manager.
- Choose which microphones to use and when throughout the show.
Educate - Teach students how to properly set up, use, and take down the sound equipment.
- Facilitate design creation with the sound crew students.
- Offer constructive feedback to help students develop their light design skills.
Implement - Set up the sound equipment in collaboration with the student sound crew, if there is a sound crew.
- Run the soundboard through tech week, performances, and if necessary, rehearsals prior to tech week.
- Run mic checks prior to each performance and fix equipment as needed.
- Change out batteries in mics as needed before rehearsals and performances.
- Store all portable sound equipment safely after each rehearsal and performance.
- Pack up all VYP sound equipment during strike and coordinate with the Recreation Program Coordinator II, Event to safely store it for the year.
Create a Safe, Encouraging and Organized Environment - Collaborate with the Director, Assistant Director, and Stage Manager to organize rehearsals to attend and time to set up and take down sound equipment.
- Mentor students through emotional challenges.
- Monitor and do what you can to ensure the safety of everyone involved in the production.
Track Hours - Track hours and communicate hours with the Recreation Program Coordinator II, Events.
- Keep within the budgeted hours allotted for the Sound Engineer position.
Qualifications - Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing.
- Ability to give, understand, and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to provide effective VYP staff, student and volunteer coordination.
- Ability to resolve disputes with firmness and impartiality.
- Ability to operate a personal computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties.
- Knowledge of first aid practices and techniques.
- Ability to demonstrate professional work habits including reliability, dependability, punctuality, adaptability, creativity, and enthusiasm for the job.
- Ability to fulfill all duties with ethical conduct, individual initiative, creative problem solving, and responsive service.
- Ability to interact professionally and cooperatively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers, coworkers, supervisors, participants, the general public, and all those encountered in the course of work
Minimum Training and Experience 3-5 years of experience in sound engineering
Preferred: bachelor's degree in audio engineering, tech theater or related field.
Special Certifications and Licenses: CPR and First Aid certifications preferred.
