Job Description

The University of Chicago Law School is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time position teaching, training and supervising law students as a Clinical Fellow, appointed with the rank of Lecturer, in the Law School's Global Human Rights Clinic (GHRC). This position is expected to begin on July 1, 2025. The appointment is for two years with the possibility of a third year re-appointment.

The GHRC works alongside partners and communities to teach students effective advocacy skills, professional ethics, and to advance justice and address the inequalities and structural disparities that lead to human rights violations worldwide. The GHRC uses diverse tactics and interdisciplinary methods to tackle pressing and under-addressed human rights issues. In advocating for important change around the world, the GHRC trains the next generation of effective, ethical, creative lawyers. The work of the GHRC varies but includes investigating and advancing accountability for mass atrocities and armed conflict, addressing the impacts of colonialism, advocating for equality and non-discrimination, and advancing socio-economic rights.

The Clinical Fellow will work under the supervision of the Director of the GHRC, and will participate in all aspects of the Clinic, including teaching and design of the clinic curriculum and management of clinic projects. The Clinical Fellow will perform the following duties at the direction of the GHRC Director: supervision of clinic students; development of clinic work-product through research and drafting, editing and revising written work; development of teaching materials and teaching in the clinic; identifying and selecting clients; conducting factual investigations; managing GHRC communications and social media outlets, and organizing and coordinating events, such as conferences and lectures, and other clinic activities. Position will likely require international travel.

Candidates must have a J.D. or equivalent international degree and at least two years of relevant work experience. Relevant work experience can include experience in international law, international human rights, public law and policy advocacy and public interest law practice. Preferred qualifications include demonstrated interest and/or knowledge in international human rights issues, prior teaching experience, experience in international human rights lawyering, demonstrated skills in research, writing and oral advocacy, ability to work with technology and communications, and organizational and planning skills. Must be a member in good standing of the bar of Illinois or another state. Fluency in English is required, and another language, preferably French or Spanish, is strongly desired.
