Major Responsibilities: Answer basic genetics related questions and refer complex inquiries to the Genetic Counselor. Prepare blood sample test requisition forms for outside genetic labs, including communication with the Genetic Counselor about which test to order and abstracting patient medical history information. Abstract medical and family history information prior to Genetic Counseling appointments to facilitate the planned consultation and create a pedigree for Genetic Counselor use. Research variants of uncertain significance and contact genetic testing labs as needed. Contact patients for pertinent records/test results of family members and analyze results. Contact patients with amended genetic test results and coordinate appointments with the Genetic Counselor. Respond to insurance company requests for further information to support coverage for genetic testing. Follow up with patients for additional information after appointments. Proofread patient genetic test result letters and ensure appropriate translations. Triage genetic counseling referrals to determine scheduling based on indication. Manage Genetic Counselor pool inbox in Epic. Maintain a patient database for all genetics patients. All responsibilities are essential job functions. Position Qualifications: License/Certification/Education: Required: Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in a related field (ex. Biology). Preferred: Interested or in the process of acquiring a Master’s degree in human genetics from an accredited program. Experience/Skills: Required: Familiarity with genetics and pedigrees. Must be a self-starter with outstanding customer service attitude. Knowledge of medical terminology. Strong interpersonal skills. Excellent oral, written, and organizational skills. Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office applications. Preferred: Familiarity with electronic medical records. Experience working with insurance companies for genetic testing authorization. Knowledge of office and laboratory procedures. Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions: Work is considered sedentary in a normal office and patient care environment.
