Iniciar for Global Action Charity Cocktail

Iniciar for Global Action Charity Cocktail

On Tuesday, October 29, Iniciar for Global Action Foundation held its Annual Charity Cocktail
in the Gardens of LoiSuites Recoleta Hotel.

Vera Nazarian, President and Founder of Iniciar for Global Action, opened the event and dwelled
on the achievements obtained so far by the Foundation in only two years after its inception.
Then, she invited several experts in “Chagas disease” and “Water and Sanitation” to participate
in the event. First, Dr. Mariana San Martino, Biologist and PhD in Education, made an emphasis
in the relation between the Chagas disease and Education. Then, Ricardo Preve, photographer
and documentary filmmaker, talked about his experience when directing the documentary entitled:
“Chagas: A Silent Killer” for AlJazeera TV, a film that registered Dr. Gustavo Farrugia´s work.
Next, Ana Miguel, from La Higuera Foundation, commented on the extent of the works performed
by her foundation under the direction of Dr. Farrugia. In relation to the new generations, journalist
César Dergarabedian commented on his awareness campaign in schools about safety on the Web.
Lastly, and to close the Chagas disease discussion, Cecilia Centurión -from the Chagas Disease Alliance/
Todos Frente al Chagas- referred to the current situation of this disease in the region and to the
strategic alliance reached between her association and Iniciar.

In the second part of this gala, and so as to introduce the theme of next year’s event (“Water and Sanitation”),
the following experts delivered their insights on said issue: Lorena Pujor, from Greenpeace, referred to
pollution in the Riachuelo; Dr. Alejandro Nadra -biologist and chemist- and Dr. Manuel Giménez –instructor-,
both members of the project named “Arsenic Detectors in Water” of the School of Exact Sciences of the
University of Buenos; and Marta Adelman from Humedales Foundation/Wetlands International.

Martín Wullich, journalist and radio announcer, anchored the exposition and auction of the works of art
prized in the 2nd Photographic Contest “An Extreme Situation set in Society or Nature”, whose jury was
headed by the distinguished photographer Diego Ortiz Mugica. Debbie MacDonald, Bachelor in Philosophy
and Arts and designer, was also member of this jury.

All funds raised in this gala will be assigned to the Foundation’s ongoing projects related to Chagas Disease
and to “Water and Sanitation” –which will be the theme addressed during the following two years
(2014-2015)-; thus, Iniciar will join the proposal brought forward by the UN, whose “UN-HABITAT,
Water and Sanitation” program aims at “… reducing by half the proportion of inhabitants without
sustainable access to drinking water by 2015…”. This way, the Foundation will help people with scarce
resources to access drinking water and proper sanitation services.
